Prior to pupillage Matthew served as an army infantry captain, where he undertook two operational deployments to Afghanistan as well as non-operational deployments to Kenya, Belize, France and Russia. As a Platoon Commander Matthew frequently attended Crown and Magistrates’ courts to liaise between defendant soldiers, counsel and solicitors. Matthew also gained exposure to court martial by acting as an Assisting Officer.
Whilst studying for the GDL Matthew taught debating to prisoners at HMPs: Wandsworth, Downview and Thameside as a volunteer on the Gray’s Inn Vocalise programme. Matthew also taught public speaking to disadvantaged school children with an interest in advocacy, on the Gray’s Inn Griffin Programme.
More recently Matthew has acted as an advocate for the Free Representation Unit, appearing on behalf of clients in social security appeals.
In 2017 Matthew was awarded the James Crouch scholarship from Gray’s Inn for studying the Bar Professional Training Course.
