Lady Justice Rafferty DBE retires as Lady Justice of Appeal with effect from 27 July 2020

Dame Anne Judith Rafferty DBE was called to the Bar in 1973, took Silk in 1990 and was elected a Bencher in 1998. She was the first female Chair of the Criminal Bar Association between 1995 and 1997 and Head of Chambers at 9 Bedford Row from 1994 to 2000.

Rafferty LJ was appointed a Recorder in 1991, a Deputy High Court Judge in 1996 and a Judge of the High Court (Queens Bench Division) in 2000. She was the Presiding Judge of the South Eastern Circuit between 2003 and 2006 and was appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal and made a Privy Councillor in 2011.  She was Chairman of the Judicial College from 2014 to 2020. In 2014, she was appointed as Chancellor of the University of Sheffield.
