International eel smuggling – recent developments

16 June 2020

The UK’s first trial for eel smuggling was successfully prosecuted by Peter Glenser QC and Sean Sullivan in February 2020. Gilbert Khoo was convicted of smuggling £53m of critically endangered eels to the Far East after a National Crime Agency investigation.

A recent report from Alex Diggins for Wired touches upon the Khoo prosecution. It details how the trade has developed recently and the challenges for law enforcement seeking to counter international offending of this type.

Peter and Sean remain instructed by the CPS Serious Fraud Division in proceedings under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 to seek to recover from Mr. Khoo assets that derive from his criminality.
